Puget Sound Innovation Stories

Washington’s Local Source Control Partnership

Washington’s Local Source Control Partnership offers small businesses in 19 Puget Sound communities free, hands-on pollution prevention assistance, such as spill prevention, proper chemical management, and other resources. Many pollution prevention programs focus on large manufacturers or facilities, leaving thousands of small businesses like auto shops, dry cleaners, and car washes with few resources for complying with environmental regulations. By working with local health departments and city and county governments, the Washington State Department of Ecology has built a statewide program using specialists that know their communities.

Between 2013 and 2015, specialists with the Local Source Control Partnership visited about 4,300 small businesses and discovered more than 6,200 potential pollution problems. Building upon their local knowledge and existing relationships, these specialists worked with business owners to resolve 87 percent of the pollution issues discovered during their survey.
